# Earn local citations and links

Local citations are mentions of the business name, address and phone on other sites, with or without a link. Prioritize maps, review sites, industry directories, chambers and local news, complete each profile fully, and avoid paid link networks that create inconsistent duplicates.

## Prerequisites

- Canonical NAP values
- A list of relevant local platforms

## Steps

1. **Select relevant platforms** *(general best practice)* — List local and industry platforms with real customers: maps, review sites, trade associations, chambers and local media. Exclude link networks.
   Check: The list contains at least ten platforms with a stated audience and contact or submission path.
2. **Complete each profile** — Fill every field using the canonical NAP, category and description. Add photos and a link to the most relevant landing page, not always the homepage.
   Check: Each submitted profile shows the canonical NAP and a working link.
3. **Measure referrals** *(general best practice)* — Tag landing pages only where the platform allows it, and review referral sessions and calls monthly. Drop platforms that send nothing after two quarters.
   Check: A monthly report lists referral sessions and calls per citation source.
