# Filter keywords for AI Overviews before you target them

Before committing content to a keyword, Google it and read the AI answer as a searcher would. If the answer fully resolves the query, target being named in the cited pages instead of the click; if it does not, rank normally. Record which pages the answer cites, which brands they name, and turn the gaps into an outreach list.

## Prerequisites

- A keyword shortlist that already passed business potential, intent and difficulty checks
- Google access in a market where AI Overviews are shown
- Search Console access to the property for the brand-mention query

## Steps

1. **Read the AI answer for each shortlisted keyword** — Search the keyword in Google and read any AI Overview as a customer would, not as an SEO. Decide whether the answer fully resolves the query before any click is needed.
Check: For your target keyword the SERP shows an AI Overview panel (or none) and your sheet records the decision satisfied or not satisfied.
2. **Split the list into mention targets and classic targets** — If the searcher is satisfied without clicking, mark the keyword as a mention target. If not, keep it as a classic ranking target. Tool queries such as calculator, checker, generator, template and planner stay classic targets because the searcher must use something the answer cannot provide.
Check: Every keyword in the sheet carries either the mention or the classic label.
3. **Collect the pages the answer cites** — For each mention keyword, note the pages linked from the AI answer, starting with listicles, which the source says make up a large share of cited pages.
Check: The sheet lists at least one cited URL per mention keyword, each tagged as listicle, comparison or review.
4. **Pull the top-ten pages for commercial queries** — Connect the Search Console property to an AI SEO tool and ask which pages rank in the top ten for best-of, alternative and versus queries in your category.
Check: The tool response returns top-ten URLs for each of the three query patterns.
5. **Record format and named brands per page** — For each ranking page note whether it is a listicle, a comparison or a review, which brands it names, and whether your site is among them.
Check: Each row in the sheet has a format value, a brand list and a yes/no for your own site.
6. **Turn the gaps into an outreach list** — Every page that names three competitors and does not name you becomes a line on the outreach list, which feeds the follow-up outreach and pitching work.
Check: The outreach sheet contains one row per qualifying page with the URL and the brands it currently names.
