Audit and fix duplicate product and collection pages first
Audit the existing store pages before adding new content: consolidate thin or overlapping collection pages, rewrite product descriptions copied from suppliers, and link pages that nothing points to. Repairing pages that already exist is faster than earning rankings for new ones and removes duplicate URLs that compete with each other.
Why this matters
Fix thin collections, duplicate supplier copy and orphan pages before writing anything new.
Before you start
- Access to the store's CMS or theme templates
- A crawl of the live site or export of URLs from the sitemap
How to apply it
Inventory the store's existing URLs General best practice
Collect every indexable URL from the XML sitemap and a full crawl so collection, product and orphan pages are all in one list.
Check: The URL list count matches the sitemap entry count plus pages discovered only by crawling.
Find thin and overlapping collection pages
Group collections that serve the same product set or query and flag pages with almost no unique text or products. Plan merges or redirects so one collection owns each topic.
Check: Each flagged collection appears in a merge/redirect list with the surviving target URL named next to it.
Rewrite supplier product descriptions
Replace copied supplier descriptions with unique copy that describes the item with store-specific detail instead of synonyms of the original text.
Check: No product page contains text identical to the supplier feed; a quoted-phrase search of the old description returns no match on the site.
List and link orphan pages
Compare crawled URLs against internal link targets to find pages with no internal links, then add contextual links from related products, collections or the category menu.
Check: A re-crawl shows each formerly orphan URL with at least one internal link pointing to it.
Request re-indexing and monitor coverage General best practice
Submit the changed collection and product URLs for indexing and watch the Search Console Pages report for the merged URLs moving to the redirect target.
Check: Search Console lists the changed URLs as indexed and the merged collection URLs as Page with redirect.
