Prioritize the five ranking levers before on-page polish

Work the five levers in order: match the page type Google shows for the query, start the title with the target keyword word for word, add at least five internal links using that keyword as anchor, build domain authority, then earn deeplinks to the page. Polish items such as alt text, schema and meta descriptions wait until these are done.

  • The target query and its current search results

How to apply it

  1. Check which page type ranks for the target query

Search the target query and look at the top 10 organic results. Note whether they are guides, comparisons, category pages or product pages, because that format is what can rank.

Check: You can name the dominant page type in the top 10 results for the query.

  2. Align the page type or change the target General best practice

If your page is a different format from the dominant one, either rebuild it in that format or pick a query where your format already matches.

Check: The page you plan to optimize is the same type as the majority of the top 10 results.

  3. Start the title tag with the target keyword General best practice

Rewrite the title element so the target keyword appears word for word at the beginning, then add the qualifier and brand after it.

Check: View-source of the URL shows a title element whose first words are the target keyword.

  4. Add at least five internal links to the page

From pages on the same topic, add in-body links pointing to the target page with the target keyword as the anchor text.

Check: A crawl or source search of the site lists at least five distinct same-topic URLs whose body links to the target page with that anchor.

  5. Build domain-level links General best practice

Start acquiring links to the domain from other sites so the site has enough authority to compete for the target query at all.

Check: The Search Console Links report or a backlink tool lists new referring domains pointing at the site.

  6. Earn deeplinks to the target page General best practice

Once the domain has baseline authority, pursue links and mentions that point at the target URL rather than the homepage.

Check: The Search Console Links report shows referring URLs pointing at the target URL.

  7. Defer polish until the levers are done

Postpone alt text, heading hierarchy, meta description, URL shape and schema changes until the five levers are in place for the page.

Check: A checklist of the five levers for the page is complete before any polish task is scheduled.
