Rewrite biased listicles so your product earns its rank
Audit listicles and comparison pages where the site ranks its own product first, then reorder entries by the criteria printed on the page and move the product to the position it honestly earns. The result is a ranking a reader can defend, without changing the page's structure or losing its internal links.
Why this matters
If your product sits first in every listicle, reorder the entries by the criteria the page states.
Before you start
- Edit access to the site's listicle and comparison page content
- A list of pages where the site ranks its own product first
How to apply it
Inventory the pages that rank the site first
Query the CMS or use a site: search to list every listicle and comparison page, then flag the ones where your own product or service sits in position 1.
Check: The inventory lists at least one URL, and each listed URL shows your product in position 1 of the ordered list.
Write down the criteria each page claims to use
Open every flagged page and note the criteria it says it uses to order the entries (price, features, use case, review score).
Check: Each flagged URL has a written criteria list, or is marked as having none.
Reorder the entries by those criteria
Sort the entries so the ranking follows the stated criteria and move your product to the position it would honestly earn. Keep the page structure, headings, tables and existing links in place.
Check: The rendered page order matches the stated criteria and your product is no longer first unless the criteria put it there.
Review the diff before publishing
Compare the current and edited versions of each page and confirm the change is a reordering plus the text edits it requires, not a rewrite.
Check: The diff shows no deleted sections, tables or internal links, only changed order and adjusted copy.
Update the intro and summary copy to match the new order
Rewrite any sentence below the list, in the intro or in the conclusion that still claims first place, so the text and the ranking agree.
Check: A search of the page for "#1", "best" and "number one" returns no claim that contradicts the new order.
Save the rules for new pages
Add the author box to the page template, link to three existing pages on the same topic with descriptive anchors, and add a rule that the site never ranks itself first in a list.
Check: A newly published listicle shows the author box, three descriptive internal links, and a Person node in the page's JSON-LD.
